Dress Rehearsal

(100 words)

He rinsed off the last of the thick hair, tapping the razor against the side of the ceramic sink.  Hand quivering, he gently placed it down near his ankle, and slowly lead it far up his smooth leg.  Silent tears slid down his face into the corners of his painted mouth.  Eyes closed, he reached blindly for the scented lotion, deeply inhaling as he spread it over his hairless legs.  He envisioned the incredible gown he had seen on his commute home, and remembered the novel, stirring feeling of faltering in mother’s heels and bauble jewelry, before father walked in.

Hello, Mom?

(100 words)

She could buy her way out.  She laughed quietly, thinking what a fucking genius idea.  For fifty cents she could make the call that would likely save her life.  She could make the call from the same hot pink, dirty phone booth that she had repeatedly used to get herself into this mess.  Oh, the irony.

She wiped vomit from the side of her mouth and winced with pain.  Catching her breath, she listened hard.  Cats.  Just filthy animals rummaging through the bins.  She’d kicked one once.  She looked back to the phone, her broken and twisted legs useless beneath her.

  1. Mom’s getting a lot of calls this week…funny that so many of us still reach out to our mothers in our darkest hours, no matter what our age. I hope your heroine has a couple quarters, and that someone wanders by who can dial the number for her!

    • Thanks, Paul. Still trying to work out glitches of having FF posts all on own page. Didn’t think about the fact that all stories would be viewed as one big, long post! Back to the drawing board…
